Looking for a wholesome spot to enjoy your morning coffee in Chelmsford? Artisan bakery, patisserie and cafe, Flour and Spoon, is widely considered to not only be the purveyor of some seriously good sourdough, but an all-round adorable place to enjoy fresh, home-cooked, honest food every day of the week.
It all started back in 2015, when the small team began experimenting with home baking in their Aveley kitchen. Pop-ups in London followed, as did a first site in Leigh-on-Sea. Now, several years later, it welcomes its second site in a beautiful 17th-century timber-framed, period building in Chelmsford, brimming with character and charm.
Stop by for delicious cakes such as the Czech traditional Medovnik, with 10 layers of indulgent honey sponge filled with caramel cream and toasted walnut nibs, alongside a pistachio and raspberry loaf, and rich, moist chocolate cakes. There's also a fabulous brunch selection, crafted using ethically and locally sourced produce, in the form of the ultimate English fry up with thick bacon, fried potatoes, chunky sourdough, grilled tomatoes and mushrooms, and free range eggs from the local farm.
The team are also proud to now offer a locally-themed afternoon tea, dreamed up by their talented pastry chefs. Book in advance and you can enjoy homemade scones, a range of creative finger sandwiches made using locally sourced ingredients, handcrafted cakes and a tea selection from the Rare Tea Co.
But there's more going on than just coffee and cake at Flour and Spoon. This neighbourhood favourite proudly creates a sense of community with its events and baking classes which happen almost every week. Choose between the likes of a macaron baking class, Italian-style baking, mastering your own sourdough and seasonal offering, such as for Easter and Christmas.
