Engel is a 1920s Berlin-themed cocktail bar at the Royal Exchange in the City of London, masterminded by respected London restaurateur Des Gunewardena. The bar is paired with Jang Restaurant - a modern Korean restaurant in the same building.
Engel stands in complete contrast to its sister venue Jang, with the opposite sides of the world as inspiration. Although both are housed within the iconic Royal Exchange building Engel is a Cabaret-inspired cocktail bar and performance space that takes inspiration from glamour and excess of 1920’s Weimar Berlin. Both projects are masterminded by Gunewardena, who was previously chief executive of D&D London, the restaurant group behind Michelin-starred Angler, Le Pont de la Tour, Launceston Place and more.
Engel takes up residence on the north and east side of the mezzanine level of this iconic and historic converted building. Featuring 16th century neoclassical architecture, the space houses several dining venues and shops. This setting gives the restaurants in this complex an atmospheric and grand feel and is ideally located right in the heart of the City. Engel will also have a feature a new outdoor terrace space that will run down the portico of the Royal Exchange, making it a perfect place for alfresco dining.
The source of inspiration is reflected in the menu which will offer guests high-end and elevated versions of Austrian and German classics. This venue will offer all-day dining making it the perfect place for an after-work drink, business meetings, weeknight dinners and time spent with family and friends at the weekend. Being a bar, the cocktails here will be the centerpiece. The drinks menu will focus on a range of classic and vintage cocktails made with modern twists and contemporary techniques. Guests will enjoy their food and drink whilst being entertained by live music and performances which will showcase cabaret-style events. Given its location and proximity to some of the biggest corporate names in the capital it’s no surprise that the venue will also host and cater to some of London’s most exclusive private events.
