The ‘two friends’ of the title are John Evans and Felice Mutti who set up this likeable Italian back in 1994 and have never looked back. “This place puts a smile on your face” says one fan, while others are quick to praise the super-friendly staff, who know the business and also know how to “make everyone feel relaxed”. However, there’s no denying that the star attraction in the “beautifully lit” dining room is the generously served, old-school trattoria food. The menu’s huge, but everything is “cooked with care”, from starters of tuna with haricot beans or mushrooms with Dolcelatte cheese sauce to traditional desserts such as zabaglione. In between, expect classic pastas galore (spaghetti vongole, fettuccine with salmon, penne all’ amatriciana) alongside risottos, grills and equally classic mains – think veal milanese, calf’s liver with bacon, beef medallions with creamy porcini sauce etc. Staff are also happy to advise when it comes to the international wine list.
