Within the town of Dorking itself visitors delight over the number of independent art and craft shops, boutiques, art galleries, vintage emporiums and antique shops. Combine this with a plethora of unique spots to eat, drink and watch the world go by and it’s no wonder that Dorking has become a popular spot for relaxing weekend breaks away. if you can venture outside of the town, there are some great restaurants near Dorking too. For those who prefer sightseeing to retail, the Dorking Museum regularly hosts interesting exhibitions, talks and activities and The Green Room Theatre regularly welcomes fantastic performing arts troupes from across the country and beyond. Elsewhere Dorking Halls hosts everything from stand-up comedy and live music to film screenings and children’s shows. On Fridays a traditional market pops up on St Martin’s Walk with traders showcasing a range of local produce including meat, cheese, confectionary and one of the best fruit and vegetable stalls in the south east. Dorking was historically known for its large poultry market – hence the large and unmissable statue of a cockerel erected on the roundabout at the town’s entrance and many references to fowl across the town.
