Part of the Crisis charity for single homeless people and ex-offenders, this spacious, light-filled daytime café is manned by trainees under the supervision of two experienced chefs. ‘Homemade from scratch’ is the culinary message, and the short daily menus bring a whole host of sandwiches, plus soups (broccoli and Stilton, say), frittatas, occasional sushi and hot dishes such as chicken and chorizo stew with couscous. There’s also a colourful salad bar and an array of home-baked goodies – not forgetting bespoke jams, pesto, hummus and more. Seasonal and locally sourced ingredients are at the hub of things, backed by carefully sourced coffees and other drinks if you simply want to chill out on one of the colourful sofas. Crisis also provides an events catering service for big groups – either in the café itself or elsewhere.
