The Grind has grown exponentially since opening its ‘flat white, skinny latte’ stop at Old Street Roundabout in 2011, adding branches in Soho and Holborn and other central locations. This Clerkenwell offshoot is its most ambitious venture yet, launched in late 2016 in a converted Victorian warehouse. Downstairs from the ground-floor restaurant and coffee bar, you’ll find a smart destination cocktail/DJ lounge. The long sleek bar – furnished, 1950s-style, with pale sherbet pink Arne Jacobsen-style swan chairs – serves fancy fixes until 2am. Plenty of time, then, to unwind after the daily grind over £8.50 classics such as Tommy’s Margarita, Hemingway Daiquiri, Clover Club, Maple Sazerac and various coffee-based cocktails. Late-night snacks also past muster, including salt-cod croquettes, char-grilled skins, cheeseburger with truffle fries, and chocolate pork belly with purple sprouting broccoli.
