You’ll discover Clarendon Cocktail Cellar in the basement at boutique hotel, Artist Residence, which is also home to Cambridge Street Café. Looks-wise, little has changed since the venue’s previous guise as the bar at 64 Degrees, but we like the Victorian steampunk taphouse pretence – all tin tiles, wooden parquet, corrugated iron bar and brick walls, warmed up with pink neons and pop art. What is new is the array of £10 cocktails inspired by iconic paintings, among them Munch’s ‘The Scream’ (mezcal, lime, cassis, agave syrup and habanero tincture); Warhol’s ‘Campbell’s Tomato Soup’ (a fiery bacon bourbon, or olive-oil vodka Bloody Mary); and a surreally interesting cider-brandy Martini, after René Magritte’s ‘Son of a Man’. Food consists of a brief selection of small plates: soft-shell crab, kale and lime mayo, say, or pork belly and sauerkraut sliders. South London ales from Orbit and Brew By Numbers are a further draw at this dishy dive in deepest Pimlico.
