In the Berkshire town of Wokingham, Chalk is a new restaurant that isn't far away from the Town Hall. A space that encourages locals and visitors to convene over some delicious food and great drinks, Chalk does a great job of using simple, fresh ingredients in beautiful ways. Well behaved dogs are welcomed, and the whole restaurant is wheelchair accessible. Committed to entertaining guests, Chalk frequently puts on a calendar of events including gin tastings, afternoon teas, wine dinners, themed parties and a monthly whisky tasting series.
You can enjoy the breakfast menu from 9am until noon, and it begins with porridge made with oat milk, apple and cinnamon compote and maple syrup, along with truffled scrambled eggs topped with baby spinach, mushroom, peppadew, feta and toasted sourdough. For more of a morning snack, try the pimped up croissant with streaky bacon, avocado or halloumi.
Dinner is served from 5pm and includes starters of potato and leek soup with crispy leeks and dill oil, pan seared scallops with blood orange, kohlrabi and golden beets, and miso grilled chicken terrine with watercress and toasted brioche. Main dishes are equally as impressive, with a fresh dish of lemon sole on the bone with asparagus, buttered new potatoes, banana puree and caper salsa, and delicious pan fried gnocchi with aubergine and mushroom pesto, sun dried tomatoes and baby spinach. From the grill try the ribeye of beef, sirloin, pork or lamb chop, and order a jug of jus, peppercorn or blue cheese sauce to pour over the top. All grills come with house basting and are served with king oyster mushrooms, triple cooked chips, plum tomato and caramelised beer onions.
