“Great Scottish seafood” is the prime reason why visitors set a course for this no-nonsense eatery atop the old CalMac ferry building overlooking Tobermory harbour. ‘The only things frozen are our fishermen’, proclaims a note at the head of the menu – and the owners are true to their word. It’s all about fresh daily supplies from their own boat and the local fleet – the contents of the catch determine what appears on the regularly updated menu. Expect clear, briny flavours and refreshingly straightforward cooking, from a ‘tapas trio’ of creel-caught langoustines, chilled oyster and cracked crab claw with yuzu mayonnaise to signature roast shellfish platters overloaded with piscine goodies. The kitchen can also turn its hand to moules marinière, Gigha halibut with creamed leeks, pancetta and pea sauce or classic haddock mornay, while pleasing traditionalists with simple grilled fish. Meat eaters and veggies get a look-in, and there are some old-fashioned puds to round things off – think cheesecake, whisky-laced chocolate pot or warm Belgian waffles.
