Truth is, if you live in Bray, you are very much likely to know a lot about restaurants already. Tiny speck on the map that it is, Bray offers a gastronomic experience that rivals most cities, but you know this already if you live there. If you’re visiting the village then you probably know too what famous names adorn the lintels above the doors, what famous faces have walked through and sat down to expect exactly the same sort of experience you yourself would expect. The streets are paved with saffron here. Otherwise, apart from the steady stream of restaurant goers, you’d be forgiven if you mistook this quiet Thameside village as just like any other. But of course, it isn’t.
Some people who share the surname Roux, a bloke called Blumenthal, and a Caldesi have all left a mark on this village. Some Michelin stars have left their craters too. The village has more awards on its lapel than an army general. Simply put, to be in Bray is to be a hop, skip, and a jump away from culinary delights that will put a smile on your face faster than you can whisper ‘ambrosia’.
Now, this is fine fare indeed. Not every night calls to be the best night ever, so perhaps you’d fancy something a little more comfortable and familiar, lest we forget not everything can be storied and celebrated worldwide. There are these options too, it may be a drive rather than a walk, but beggars can’t be choosers is an ironically appropriate phrase. Nearby Maidenhead has plenty of options to satisfy a hungry person looking for a simple meal, with restaurants serving food inspired by worldwide cuisines – the same is true for Reading too. Marlow is only a short drive (or sail) north and can appease too. Bray is first and foremost a restaurant town, and spoilt for choice doesn’t quite cut it.
