Boxcar Bar & Grill in Marybelone is a stylish neighbourhood hotspot centred around an impressive charcoal grill. This timeless eating and drinking den carefully sources its ingredients from local suppliers, from London markets to the likes of Natoora, Shrub, Henderson Seafood, Walter Rose & Sons and many other likeminded producers. While all its top quality steaks are from ex-dairy, grass fed and rare breed cattle.
Following an extensive refurbishment in 2022, diners are able to revel in comfortable and classic surroundings, while enjoying a redesigned al fresco area in the summer, and an intimate chef’s table for those real foodie moments.
Alongside a selection of British brasserie favourites, Boxcar is best known for its supreme steaks. Using English wood and charcoal to achieve the best possible flavour, guests can choose from a Butcher’s Cuts menu featuring rib on the bone, porterhouse, côte de boeuf and chateaubriand. All cuts are served with a sauce and a side - think skin on fries, a salad of chicory, pear, candied walnuts, blue murder, and buttermilk or roasted root vegetables with local honey.
From the main menu, starters include wild mushrooms on toast with an egg yolk, and beef shin croquettes with Worcester ketchup. While mains span market fish with caper butter and grilled broccoli or an ex-dairy beef burger with Gruyère, pickles, house ketchup and skin on fries.
Drinks wise, there’s an exciting range of bespoke cocktails, draught beers, interesting wines and cold-pressed juices for something non-boozy. From the cocktail list, look out for seasonal numbers like the Braeburn Spritz made with aker aperitif, suze, tarragon, cider and Prosecco, or a Walnut Old Fashioned featuring spiced rum, maple and walnut bitters.
