Shangri-La has taken London by storm since it’s opening in 2014 and is now extending its pioneering ethos of Asian hospitality all the way down to the ground floor of the Shard. Named after its location on 31 St. Thomas Street, Bar 31 is a charming oasis in the hustle and bustle of London Bridge.
Bar 31 strives to be more than just a bar. Created ‘by locals for locals’, it's a community hub with an authentic neighbourhood feel, a difficult ambience to achieve in one of London’s most touristy boroughs. The walls are decorated with art created by local artists, live music is on every Friday and Saturday featuring some of London’s best buskers, and events such as open mic nights, art classes, yoga sessions and comedy nights are also held here.
This emphasis on local community is also clear in the Bar 31 menu. The craft beer selection focuses on local breweries in Bermondsey and beyond, and the refreshing range of cocktails is made with gin and spirits sourced from local distilleries. Other drinks available include homemade lemonade, cocktails, and an array of champagne.
Much of the food here is sourced from the nearby Borough Market, or other local providers such as Cannon & Cannon and Neal’s Yard. The menu boasts a selection of delicious pizzas and pizettes, as well as bar snacks and a range of specials including crispy calamari, chicken Milanese buns and a charcuterie board.
Bar 31’s location makes it a great spot to relax after a day at the office or a busy day of sightseeing. The expansive terrace is full of vibrant leafy green plants and punctuated with orange accents, the ideal place for people-watching or simply enjoying the sunshine. Check it out during summer and sip on one of the seasonal Cointreau cocktails or frozen margaritas.
