“Look for the big teapot on the wall”, say Pete and Helen Sparks, owners of this cracking roadside café a few miles outside Sheffield. Originally built as a village shop and drop-in for workers
constructing the nearby reservoir, it’s now something of a Mecca for cyclists, walkers, mountain bikers and hikers – particularly from nearby Bradfield and Stocksbridge (maps, guides and kit are
all on sale in the café, along with newspapers, preserves and works by local artists). If quick sustenance is required, take your pick from sandwiches, Italian-style wraps, cheese on toast and
suchlike. The all-day breakfasts are legendary hereabouts (try the Dam Buster version), and there are filling lunches too – think lamb and mint stew in a giant Yorkshire pudding, veggie bean curry
or cold ham, egg and chips. Homemade puds and cream teas also hit the spot.
