Ideally located within the hustle and bustle of London’s Southbank, next to Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre, Swan at the Globe pays homage to one of Britain’s greatest playwrights. Set over three floors, each with a view as impressive as the last over the River Thames and St Pauls Cathedral, is a traditional British pub serving delicious, seasonal food. And the light rooms, plush seating, and historical location make this the perfect spot for relaxing and refueling whilst taking in the views of the city.
At The Swan, enjoying the classic British pastime of afternoon tea is a long-held tradition, and here the team enjoy using literature and plays as inspiration to theme the changing menus. Currently, John Webster's 17th-century play The Duchess of Malfi influences the selection of treats, giving them an Italian feel.
First, kick things off with a drink such as a custom cocktail of Amalfi lemon sorbet toppped with Prosecco, or a glass of sparkling wine such as Rathfinny English sparkling or Deutz Brut-Classic Champagne. Onto the savoury selection and we like the sound of the ricotta and spinach tartlet, alongside mozzarella and tomato pesto sandwiches, and Scottish sandwich salmon buns with lemon ricotta.
Then, it's time for sweet treats such as an Amalfi lemon meringue tart, as well as pistachio macarons and cherry panna cotta with Amaretto shortbread. Finally, tuck into raison and plain scones, smothered in apricot jam and clotted cream.
Something that really stands out about the afternoon teas here is how flexible and accomodating the team are happy to be. As well as the classic menu they offer gluten-free, nut-free, vegan, vegetarian and savoury only options.
Whilst the theme of the menus may change, there is one thing that remains constant here, and that’s the ability for these afternoon teas to transport you to the front row at one of Shakespeare’s plays. As if you needed any more reason to give this place a try, you’ll be pleased to hear that every time you purchase afternoon tea here, a portion will be donated to help support the Globe.
