The ground floor of this collaboration between The Breakfast Group and Planet of the Grapes is taken up by 68 – a prosaic wine bar where all bottles are enticingly priced at £20. Some are more rewarding than others in a range that would probably set you back around £6.50 at the supermarket. However, we prefer Boston – the upstairs cocktail lounge with a well-worn wood-panelled bar that’s high on raffish retro charm. Factor in chaps in white tuxedos, and you could be back in Soho circa 1950. Ideas that pique our interest include complex sours, an offbeat spicy Old Fashioned involving cranberry vodka and chorizo-washed Woodford Reserve, and various drinks made with fortified wines: Loud Tempests, for example, mixes Lagavulin whisky, Bénédictine and samphire-infused dry white port. We’re also intrigued by the semi-secret antechamber – the sort of gussied-up Soho salon that hints at scarlet affairs and risqué behaviour.
