SquareMeal Review of 222 Veggie Vegan

Bronze Award

Despite its stark location on an ugly stretch of the North End Road, this unassuming spot survives thanks to the quality of its exclusively vegan offering. Back-to-basic, plain-wood interiors might lack character, but the meat-free menu does more than enough to pull in the local veggie crowd. Start with something raw (fresh asparagus with olive oil) or something cooked (sautéed artichoke hearts) before trying one of the cheekily reinvented mains such as a veggie-mince burger, seitan stroganoff or a vegan roast with potato and parsnip mash. To finish, tofu cheesecake might be a step too far, so play it safe with apple crumble or pancakes and chocolate sauce. As you’d expect, there are plenty of smoothies and fruit juices to drink, as well as a couple of lagers and a brace of wines.

I went here for my 6th anniversary. I had previously dined at Plant in Poland street and lamented it when it closed, and wondered where the chef had gone. I booked a 1pm table, but got there early at 12.30 and the waitress accommodated us happily. The food was a buffet and I was a tad disappointed with this in that it was the a la carte I was interested in – I wil l write a further review once the main chef is in and I eat on the a la carte menu. That said, the food was pretty tasty and was good value for money. It's a bit of a shame that its predecessor, Plant, shut down as it had more impressive food on its menu, and Iw was hoping for that. I could not complain about the service ass the waitress was on her own, and did her very best. It was more of a fancy cafe than it was a restaurant, but it did the fundamental thing right, and that was make good vegan food. I will be going back, but on an evening to sample the a la carte menu – please please please make some of the old dishes from the previous restaurant available

My girlfriend and I arrived at 222 Veggie Vegan a Friday evening around 19. The place was about half-full and the general atmosphere seemed pretty good. We got a table fast but after that the service-level went down somewhat: the waitress first didn't give us enough time and later on apparently didn't see us. This was most likely to do with the fact that there were two waiters for the whole restaurant which later became rather full. This doesn't excuse anything though, and the only reason for not rating the service lower is that the waiters were nice. The food was really good: our meals were very tasty and plentiful. The menu is wide and varied and I'd love to go back and try other dishes there. They have vegetarian and vegan dishes from most of the world so you can pick and choose pretty much as you like, a definite plus when you're used to restaurants having at most two or three vegetarian options. The only minus about the food was the desert: chocolate cake, tasty but too dry. All in all we were quite happy with the experience at the restaurant. Our meals were reasonably priced and tasted great. The service wasn't excellent but on the other side didn't really detract from the experience. If I'm in the neighbourhood and hungry, I'll definitely be coming by again.
