SquareMeal Review of Sophie's Steakhouse Chelsea

Bronze Award

Good for sober midweek dining as well as Friday-night revelling, this Fulham Road fixture made its name with British beef, and the kitchen now butchers and dry-ages all its carcasses. Crowds continue to pack the conservatively cool space, with its blood-red banquettes and stripped brickwork – although we were expecting more finesse in the presentation of Sophie's headline steaks and burgers. Elsewhere, the kitchen excels with vibrant starters of hand-picked crab with coriander, while puds keep it traditional with fruit crumble and cheesecake. The weekday express menu is cracking value, and well-drilled staff are helpful when it comes to the carefully chosen wine list.

Rudest waitress EVER

I came here to eat with my friend two nights ago, was really looking forward to it. I arrived and had a cocktail on my own, which was perfectly nice, pricey, but not beyond what you'd expect for the Kings Road.
We were then seated, by a nice waitress who was brunette. I asked if I could charge my phone, and she said that was fine and took it behind the bar.

We ordered food, and my mussels arrived with grit, in a completely tasteless sauce which could have been milk, and lukewarm. The waitress also at this point changed, to a tall woman with short blonde hair, who LITERALLY eye-rolled and huffed when we asked to order anything. She looked me up and down numerous times judging my attire, and was even whispering to a male member of staff about my friend and I, quite obviously. When we went out for a cigarette, and I asked to borrow some matches, the bartender said to this blonde waitress, 'See, I told you they weren't going out to smoke a spliff'.

When the meal ended, I did not complain about the terrible food, I asked as politely to have my phone back. The blonde waitress LITERALLY rolled her eyes into the back of her head, looked me up and down and said 'ughhhhh', then stormed off. I literally felt like crying I felt so judged, like I must have worn the wrong clothes to the restaurant or something. When she returned it, she slammed it down and it had not been put onto charge at all, just left behind the bar.

I really feel like for the enormous price the bill came to, I should not have left feeling judged, not good enough for the establishment, accused of doing drugs which I would not dream of doing, and looked down upon. I really was appalled and upset.

Brilliant atmosphere, fabulous food, cocktails are the best in London hands down, can be expensive when drink is added but a real treat.

Not what it used to be ...
I used to really enjoy Sophie's, however, I have been three times over the last year and have been very disappointed each time. £27.95 is not cheap for an 8oz fillet so you expect it to be good, but the last three times the cooking has been off, and worse the quality of the meat has not been up to standard. Steaks were over cooked and dry, and the meat was not tender. Also the creamed spinach, which use to be fantastic, was tough and stringy, and the baked potato was under cooked. I have given them three chances but enough is enough – you should expect a decent steak in a steakhouse restaurant, especially at this price. Overpriced and under quality. The service was nice and friendly though and the atmosphere is always good.

Decent steakhouse but no more
Sophie's, I have discovered, is one of the central hubs of Chelsea for the young/middle aged crowd to go for drinks and eat copious amounts of beef. Like a moth drawn to light, my partner and I ventured out to join the masses and overall had an enjoyable evening. The first thing to note is that reservations are not allowed, which means either get there early, or be prepared for a wait. The bar is competent but not outstanding in its drinks quality, but nevertheless was packed with people waiting. Don't go to Sophie's if you want a quiet dinner – it is absolutely roaring with noise inside, but this does make for great atmosphere. Once seated, a little wooden board of salami is presented as a sort of ‘get-you-going’ item – decent but a bit fatty. We ordered a couple of steaks – a sirloin-on-the-bone and a cote de boeuf, with chips and a side salad. The steaks were decent enough in flavour, but a bit stringy in texture and didn't have that ‘melt-in-your-mouth’ feeling. The cooking levels left a bit to be desired, with my medium rare sirloin being much more on the medium side and my partner's medium-well coming out a decidedly pink looking medium. The chips, so often overlooked in restaurants, were average as they were a bit greasy and nowhere near as crispy as they could have been. The side salad was excellent, with a lovely light dressing. Puddings were par for the course and not exciting enough to make comment on. Overall, decent, but no more than that. In saying that though, it is streets ahead of the two Marco Pierre White steakhouses in the area, which in truth is a really bad reflection on the disaster that is the MPW chain of commercial steak restaurants rather than a rousing commendation for Sophie's.

Great food and a nice atmosphere. Always busy and a good addition to the increasingly popular Fulham Road. Oh and they also do brilliant mash! A must for a steakhouse.

There is little one can say about Sophie's Steakhouse. Fantastic for steaks. Other dishes look very good also. Sides are traditional steak house types – creamed spinach. Very buzzy atmosphere of chelsea professional types. Does get very busy and therefore could have to wait up to an hour and ten minutes, as happened on one occassion arriving there at 19:45 on a Saturday, but the wait is a testament to the good food, great atmosphere and friendly staff.
