The Pelican is a pub with a lot of history and dates as far back as 1870. It's always been the cornerstone of the local community, but the team undertook a refurbishment in 2022 to relaunch under new management - co-owners Phil Winser and Richard Squire, and restaurateur James Gummer. The team here focuses on local suppliers who use sustainable production methods, always keeping an eye on the impact they have on the planet.
If you’re looking to head for dinner here but don’t want to deal with the crowds, then the private dining room makes an exceptional alternative to the main dining room. You’ll find a pared back space with warm, neutral tones, and wood from the floor to table and chairs.
The space holds between 30 seated or 45 standing, meaning you can settle in for a long dinner with an open fireplace perfect for creating the ultimate cosy atmosphere, or indulge in a cocktail and canape evening when you’re looking for something a little more formal. Whilst the room may be downstairs, it still boasts plenty of natural light with high ceilings and double sash windows that allow the sunlight to flood through from the street.
The menu changes with the seasons, but you can always expect simple British food done well, such as canapes like spider crab toast and venison haunch skewers, or larger plates like chicken pie and whole roasted turbot, with the latter being served family style in the centre of the table for everyone to share. Perhaps one of its best qualities is the private bar that comes with the room to make sure all of your guests are well watered.
Whether you’re after a casual dinner or a big celebration, the team are on hand to help plan your perfect event.
