Maltby Street Market is one of those rare nooks within a city, littered with quirky venues, speakeasy cocktail bars and independent boutiques that all look straight out of a film set. Although, in London thankfully, these kinds of streets aren't all that rare, there is something special about Maltby Street and in particular one its eateries - Poulet.
Snuggled under one of the brick railway arches, Poulet doesn't look like your usual rotisserie restaurant (if there is a 'norm' in this field). While the dishes are pleasingly simple, the decor is flamboyant with purple-hued lighting, vintage lamps your Gran would be proud to own and urns filled with feathers. The vibe is thrown-together, but in a charming way, with a mis-match of tables under a canopy of fairy lights and parasols.
If you're thinking this might be a good place for a party, you are absolutely right. When it comes to private dining events, the Poulet team have a 'challenge accepted' kind of mentality and will go above and beyond to see you and your friends shimmying into the evening. Private parties have exclusive use of the entire restaurant and opening hours can be adjusted so that you can stay a little longer.
In terms of food, the clue is in the name. The menu revolves around rotisserie chicken and there's always a sandwich and salad on offer, as well as half and whole chickens, to be enjoyed alone or shared. Sides include chips, sweet potato fries, halloumi fries, side salads and rosemary garlic new potatoes. While it doesn't sound like the most vegetarian-friendly of places, there is a plant-based option which changes regularly but might be something like a Mediterranean tart with basil crust served with chips, a lick of curry sauce and a side salad.
Drinks wise, take your pick! Poulet offers a selection of draft and bottled beers, ciders, all the classic wines as well as a selection of natural wines, too, and bubbles if you're in the mood to celebrate. The bar staff love mixing up cocktails, so make sure you check out the menu which features the likes of a Poulet Colada or classics like a paloma or an espresso martini.
