No, we're not talking about the famous tart, although the Bakewell Tart was invented in Derbyshire in the 19th century. Bakewell is a market town in the Derbyshire Dales, and is also known for its Bakewell pudding (instead of jam, frangipane and icing, that one consists of a flaky pastry base with a layer of sieved jam and topped with a filling made of egg and almond paste). This small Peak District town is home to one of the oldest markets in the UK, still running today, dating back to the 14th century. Bakewell is a popular choice with walkers and hikers, as there are many beautiful trails that you can explore when setting off from here. Every August, people from all over the world gather to visit The Bakewell Show – with livestock competitions, a funfair and food and drink stalls.
