Gordon Ramsay’s Savoy Grill set the scene for the festive season to come

The Savoy was the first hotel in London to operate with electricity. It was also the first hotel to have bullet-proof windows. Tonight, it’s hosting the very first Christmas in July celebration in its 128-year history. We feel honoured to have played a part – we’ve invited 30 of our VIP readers to test-drive what Gordon Ramsay’s
Savoy Grill will be offering groups over the festive period.
It might be 25 July, but outside couldn’t be more wintery if it tried. Arriving rain-soaked, the cosy D’Oyly Carte private dining room, decked out in flickering candles and a twinkling Christmas tree, is a welcome sight. We begin with a knockout cherry cocktail in the adjoining art-deco bar before moving into the private room for dinner. As the wine begins to flow, a three-piece band plays some classic Christmas tunes. It all feels very festive.
We start with a delicate omelette Arnold Bennett. However, instead of the usual filling of smoked haddock, there are layers of smoked salmon to be found beneath the melted cheese topping. A nice twist on the traditional salmon starter.
The Savoy Grill chefs stick with the classics when it comes to the main event. Roasted turkey comes with all the trimmings: stuffing, chipolatas, roast potatoes and parsnips and cranberry sauce. It’s also served with the tastiest bread sauce I’ve ever had (sorry, Mum). I delight in seeing some of our overseas guests sample it for the first time.
Finally, we’re served individual Christmas puddings with brandy custard. As is tradition, I end the meal feeling just like the turkey – stuffed. Well, it wouldn’t be Christmas without feeling a little overindulgent. It also wouldn’t be Christmas without a present or two – the goodie bag filled with macarons is a lovely way to end the evening. Bring on December!

The events team kept it classy by giving the Christmas crackers a miss. No one really likes messing their hair up over a posh dinner, do they?
