Get stuck in for some summery Middle Eastern sharing plates in Clerkenwell – ideal for groups
Are you like Joey from Friends, who doesn’t share food? Middle Eastern joint Sarona is not the place for you then, as that’s exactly what its menu is designed for.
The food is reminiscent of Arabic markets, from which Sarona takes its name. It also plays homage to the heritage of Greek, Turkish, Israeli, Moroccan, Iranian, Iraqi and Palestinian cooking – known for using few and simple ingredients, yet bursting with flavour.
With executive head chef Aviv Lavi at the helm, dishes come in four categories (raw, fried, comforting, and charred & grilled) with sides. The devil is in the detail, as the humble ingredients and honest presentation leaves no room for hiding. That’s why plates such as the heritage tomato salad with crème fraiche and fresh oregano (delicious), and the beetroot, orange and feta salad (earthy and zingy) stood out. Equally, we made sure to finish every little bit of the charred aubergine with a tahini and date syrup, and the tahini ice cream we had for dessert was a nutty, sweet and novel experience.
To me, there is nothing that brings a group together more than the relaxing atmosphere created by sharing food. It engages conversation and breaks barriers. I disagree with the connotation that Middle Eastern food can’t be sophisticated – casual doesn’t have to mean informal. What I’m trying to say is that you should book your next private dinner at Sarona.
