The leftfield creation of four Goldsmiths graduates, Zigfrid von Underbelly has decor to match its tongue-twister of a name: totem poles dotted around; horned skulls on the walls; bikes, surfboards & snowboards careering across the ceiling. As Hoxton Square has lost some of its lustre, so this once-hip hangout has merged into the mainstream. Staff seem to be resting on their laurels, too; they’re not always very helpful. The menu lists burgers, salads, tasting plates & such staples as fish & chips or bangers & mash. There’s a brunch menu at weekends, as well as ‘late-night bowls’ after 11.30pm. The drinks list, though spare, features a few well-chosen cocktails. Most nights there’s music: from surf rock, funk & 1990s hip-hop at Wipeout!, to Mondo Retro’s hip sounds of the 1960s.
