The 1980s advertising jingle held that “your money’s safe with the Woolwich” – and it still is, when you invest in Sharp’s Doom Bar, Fusilier or locally brewed Hop Stuff’s oatmeal stout from half a dozen hand-pulled real ales on offer here. The building society’s landmark marble-halled HQ is the latest interesting conversion from pub chain Antic, who have a string of premises such as former post offices, bowls clubs, tram depots and dance academies. Grand of scale, the venue boasts an open-plan main bar, a mezzanine lounge and quirky intimate spaces, all done out like pre-Coronation civic function suites. Wines and cocktails are geared to more modern tastes, while a menu of seasonal British pub grub, snacks, sharing platters and Sunday roasts is planned when the kitchens are fully fired up. DJs play party tunes until 1am at weekends.
