What the Pitta is a staple for any vegan looking for a quick and reliable fix in the city – there are sites in Brighton, Manchester, and multiple in London. Hailed as creating the ‘first vegan doner kebab’, What the Pitta’s whole menu is vegan.
The story of What the Pitta’s origins goes like this: after turning vegan, one of What the Pitta’s founders lamented the lack of quality vegan takeaways out there. His co-founder told him of his uncle’s vegan doner recipe in Germany, and the rest is history.
Now a franchise, but still family fun, What the Pitta aims to serve up British favourites with a fun vegan twist. And indeed since its launch, it’s become lauded in the vegan (and non-vegan) fast food world – winning Best Vegan Caterer at Vegfest Awards 2018, and Best London Takeaway at the Kebab Awards 2020 (the first vegan winner in history!).
The Manchester site can be found in the Northern Quarter – where you’d expect any cool food place to find its home in the city. What the Pitta’s menu is full of delicious vegan dishes for diners. There’s, of course, the classic vegan doner kebab – spiced soya pieces, mixed salad, hummus, tzatziki, and jalapeno peppers in a flatbread wrap. You can also opt for the doner chip box, which sees a lot of the kebab fillings alongside paprika spiced chips.
If you want the best of both worlds, you can go for the doner gyros, in which you’ll get all of your fillings, as well as paprika fries, inside the flatbread wrap. Basically, you can get your doner fix in every which way. You can also mix it up by going for the chick’n gyros, falafel wrap, or even a VKC Chick’n Burger. Spoilt for choice…
Sides are simple but effective: paprika fries, waffle fries, onion rings, chick’n nuggets, as well as some more Mediterranean options like falafel and hummus, tzatziki, flatbread, or olives.
