You might not expect to find a serious restaurant on a driving range; then again, you might not expect to find a driving range in inner London. Bright, airy and modern, Vinothec Compass is located at the Peninsula Golf Range in North Greenwich and was dreamed up by Arnaud Compas, founder of Borough Market’s splendid Bedales wine shop, and Keith Lyon. Unsurprisingly their new venue has plenty of bottle. The impressive wine wall is full of delights for oenophiles, containing more than 600 cuvées at remarkably reasonable mark-ups. Food too is a cut above, with good-looking Spanish-accented dishes that deliver on taste. Standouts include warmly spiced txangurro (a traditional Basque-style baked crab starter) and sweet lamb cutlets topped with zesty gremolata. Fancy burgers and steaks also please the golfing fraternity – who can be seen practising their swings, through full-length windows offering stunning views over the range to Canary Wharf’s skyscrapers.
