When you’re in a seaside town like Whitstable, there aren’t many things better on a sunny day than getting a classic fish and chips and that’s exactly what VC Jones of Whitstable does. Based on Whitstable’s Harbour Street, the family-run restaurant has been trading since 1962, making it one of the town’s oldest fish and chip shops. With the option to sit in the restaurant or to take away your portion of fish and chips to sit on the beach and inhale the sea air, you can’t go wrong with its traditional offering and there is often a queue which shows the popularity of VC Jones amongst locals and tourists alike.
The outside of the restaurant is just as you would expect, with a red and white sign reading ‘fish luncheons and suppers’ maintaining an old-school feel, and large windows stretching across the front allowing you to see into the restaurant. The inside is as traditional as the outside with a few wooden tables dotted around and a counter at one end to order from. There is also minimal décor, making VC Jones of Whitstable brilliantly unpretentious and lending it a particularly relaxed air – the perfect place to tuck into the crowd-pleasing menu of food on offer.
When it comes to the menu, you can get everything you might expect from a fish and chips shop. There is a variety of different types of crispy breaded fish available, including skate, plaice, haddock, and of course cod, to accompany the generous portions of chips. If you’re less of a fish fan, there’s no need to worry as chicken nuggets and battered sausage also appear on the menu, as well as a selection of pies and pasties. This is all topped off with sides such as mushy peas and baked beans to accompany your mains.
