This sweet and homely restaurant is the perfect place to enjoy an evening meal after a day spent exploring Kent’s rugged coastline. With family values and welcoming staff, this small eatery feels immediately inviting.
The menu – which let’s be honest, is why we’re all here – is a masterclass in being led by the seasons. Locally-sourced, high-end produce is given pride of place with the menu flexing in response to what’s best at that moment (meaning even in the space of one sitting you can find the line-up changing). Catering for all, each day there’s a selection of organic and free-range meat and fish dishes as well as vegetarian and vegan offerings.
If you happen upon Victuals and Co between Wednesday and Saturday you will be dining from the a la carte menu in the evenings, while Friday, Saturday and Sunday lunchtimes bring with them a set-price menu for quick and easy enjoyment.
Sunday evenings have to be our favourite sitting however, when the chefs produce their unique run of ‘Raid the Larder’ dishes. These are a unique showcase of things that have been popular on the menu that week, as well as plates that have been designed to use up whatever produce the kitchen has left for their final service. While this offers a fun way to try new combinations and exciting pairings it does mean diners have to be flexible, as often there’s a limited run of each dish.
Expect far-reaching cuisine where classics like pan fried scallops with truffle cauliflower puree, bacon and pea shoots sit alongside a richly spiced green Thai curry with crispy noodles, red onion and baby corn. Vegans and vegetarians might enjoy something along the lines of a cauliflower katsu curry with pickles and peanuts for mains at dinner time.
Interiors are warm and cosy with wooden beam ceilings, a panelled dining room and modern feature seating.
