Umami has gained a cult following, through its balanced flavours and speedy service. The interior is pared back, with wooden booths and an open kitchen in the centre of the room, but the atmosphere is always high energy. However, it doubles up as an ultra popular takeaway, as the menu is full of dishes that travel well, and are perfect for on the go.
Whilst Umami pitches itself as a restaurant that focuses on peri peri dishes, with wings, ½ chickens and various platters that allow you to choose your flavour and spice level, it also offers a range of other meals that arguably steal the spotlight from the spicy chicken options. The bubble wrap gained notoriety within locals for its simple but punchy flavours, like the chicken option with Lebanese herbs and spices, or the falafel wrap with salad and halloumi. There are also smashed burgers that are so juicy they come with a warning sign for the mess - but trust us, it’s worth the grubby hands. You can expect a variety of fillings like one with a lamb patty, portobello mushroom, or our personal favourite, the Umami Burger. This comes with two smashed beef patties, American cheese, and the Umami secret sauce, which is loaded with flavour in every bite.
The dessert menu is limited with just a couple of cheesecakes on offer, but the flavours come in Oreo or Biscoff, so it could be worse. However if you’re looking to get your sweet fix, it’s worth noting that Umami offers an impressive list of shakes available for instore and delivery. Expect all of the favourite chocolate bars in milkshake form, from Kinder Bueno to Milkybar and aero mint, as well as the classics like banana, vanilla and strawberry. Umami serves good, simple food, served promptly.
