Without much fanfare, the guys at Fifty-Five snuck in to this formerly tired old boozer in SW4 and set about cloning their popular Camden cocktail late lounge. The result is striking: The Royal Oak now resembles a wood-clad, low-key liquor lounge in Brooklyn. ‘What’s your poison?’ asks a pink neon sign beside the bar. Take your pick from a vast cast of cocktails – including Dark and Stormy, Clover Club, Tommy’s Margarita, Sazarac and Flamingo (Whitley Neill gin, lime, apricot liqueur and grenadine) – sold at £10 for two during the happy ‘hour’, which lasts from 5pm to 10pm most nights. Pizzas are similarly discounted, sporting names such as Buffalo, Pescatarian, Spanish Pig and The Goat. Order them with draughts from Meantime and Samuel Adams breweries, guest real ales or something from the dozen-strong list of wines that includes a perky Portuguese house red and white.
