Tooting Tram & Social

SquareMeal Review of Tooting Tram & Social

Drinking establishments don’t come much groovier than this. Knocked-about furniture & grand bric-a-brac have been assembled by someone with a clever eye, giving this huge room, converted from a disused tram shed, both an intimate & a grandiose feel. To get the full benefit, arrive after an early dinner (preferably at sister pub The Antelope, just down the road), stake your claim to one of the sofas & get your drinks order in fast (they’re pricey, but good). The later the hour, the busier things get, the more hard-nosed the doormen have to be (a one-in, one-out system often operates at weekends), & the longer the wait for drinks. Cleverly set & wired up, the space makes a great setting for parties & funky functions.

This is a great bar in Tooting, the only minuses are the surly service (they give you your change back on a plate!) and the bag searches on the way in (no I don't have anything dodgy in there) and the fact that it is a bit pretentious, oh and that's its very pricey too.. Good selection of beer and wine though, nice to see Coopers + Sierra Nevada on offer and interesting bar with all the nick nacks around the room + mismatched sofas…

This place is FAB and just what Tooting needed. Balham and Clapham have long had trendy bars, and now tooting has joined in for all the people who would love to live elsewhere but just cant afford it. Great beer/cider/wine selections – random stuff but thats what you want (unless you are a chav who does not like change and who would have preferred the Scream pub that it was before). Service also good, and able to offer recommendations. Somewhere you can go and curl up on a leather sofa by a fire, and hear yourself think! great if you know your friends are often late as you dont feel out of place sitting by yourself watching people. Big Screens show films and the mishmash of furniture offers a laid back feel. I love the place, and just hope more bars like this come to Tooting. For reference, the Balham Bowls Club is owned by the same people.

I'm very sorry but I have to say I preferred the appallingly awful student venue this used to be – at least it had an honest feel about it where as this place seems so completely pretentious and contrived it's impossible to enjoy. Service gets an 8 mark but then again it's not hard to provide good bar service. It would fit in nicely if located in the “Nappy Valley” of Northcote Road but seems very out of place. Last time I went I noticed a sign about bag searches on the door – not sure if that's still the policy but in any case I will be avoiding.
