Located at the top of Chester’s City Road not far from the canal, The Yard is a family-run contemporary Italian restaurant serving wonderful freshly-cooked food alongside a fun drinks menu. It is also connected to The Boardroom Cocktail lounge which sits right below the restaurant.
Everything about the Yard is bright, modern and spacious, with yellow plastic chairs around all of the widely spread tables. Lightbulbs dangle from the roof on the end of long wires and there are small references to Italy spread around the dining room too. This all lends a beautifully relaxed ambience to the restaurant and makes it a perfect spot to sit back and enjoy the appealing food on offer.
An incredibly reasonable fixed price menu is available throughout the week for both lunch and dinner and costs just £15 for three courses. You can expect dishes such as black pudding with crispy egg and chutney, and beetroot cured salmon with orange fennel salad; mains on this menu include dishes like fresh pasta with beef cheek bolognaise, and lemon and rosemary chicken with sautéed potatoes; and desserts include a tempting peanut butter and jelly sandwich.
A far broader a la carte menu is separated into prima, secondi and dolci. Smaller dishes include a gorgonzola soufflé, burrata served with sweet and sour beetroot, and calamari served with a prosecco aioli. Whereas, there are secondi dishes on offer ranging from spaghetti carbonara, to a rump steak served with tomato and mushrooms. For pudding, you have the option of dishes like apple and ginger sponge with marmalade ice cream, or a selection of cheeses.
The food is accompanied by an affordable selection of wines which are available by the glass and bottle, as well as both draught and bottled beers; there is also a decent variety of gins available.
