Time was when The Wizard, nestled on the borders of woodland behind the dramatic sandstone escarpment of Alderley Edge, was just another attractive Cheshire pub. But these days, it is a serious restaurant with prices to match. The interior has the best of both worlds – nouveau rustic furnishings under olde worlde beams – & it attracts a smart clientele from near & far. The modern British-cum-Mediterranean menu changes regularly, & the cooking is confident & is followed through with professional service & good wines. Typical dishes might be seafood starters, such as salmon rillettes with fresh coriander or scallops with herb salad & sauce vierge, followed by chargrilled Cumberland sausages with creamy mash, rump of lamb with dauphinoise potatoes, or sirloin with chunky chips. For the area, The Wizard is on the pricey side, but it offers better value than many less able local restaurants.
