SquareMeal Review of The Willow Tea Rooms at Watt Brothers

Glasgow’s celebrated artist, architect and designer Charles Rennie Mackintosh created the fabulous interiors for these must-visit tea rooms at the behest of their original owner/patron Kate Cranston in 1904 – although the ‘Room de Luxe’ was lovingly restored in the 1980s by Anne Mulhern. Marvel at the exquisite mirrored friezes and art-nouveau designs, the leaded glass doors embossed with brooding maidens, the distinctive high-backed chairs and silver furniture before sampling the most famous afternoon tea in the city. Expect a traditional three-tiered stand loaded with fresh-cut sandwiches, scones and buttered shortbread, plus cakes and pastries from the trolley and a choice of loose-leaf teas. Willow’s meringues are legendary, but the all-day offer runs all the way from porridge and scrambled eggs to salads, speciality sandwiches and Scottish specialities – think rarebits, haggis with neeps, Arbroath smokies, mince ‘n’ tatties, and sweet cloutie dumplings.

Afternoon tea

visited the Willow tearoom today to celebrate Easter Weekend . My daughter and I chose the Afternoon Tea for two whilst my husband chose the roast beef sandwich .I was impressed with the cake selection and the scones but not so with the sandwiches as I felt they had been made in advance .The outer sandwich bread was very dry as if it had been made in advance and was beginning to dry up . I kow I am being picky but I do like my sandwiches to be freshly made.
