The Turnpike is in the centre of Bawtry High Street, a quintessential English market town just outside Doncaster. The decor matches the location. It has the feel of a traditional country pub with modern updates. Live sport is also a large part of The Turnpike’s offering, ranging from Premier League football to boxing.
Food is served all day. Starters are a choice of seven small plates, including cheesy mac bites, a prawn and calamari duo and southern fried chicken goujons. You’ll also find a range of sharing nachos and wings, the latter can be either cauliflower or chicken.
Mains are led by the pub favourites. Options include sausages and mash, fish and chips, lasagne and breaded scampi. There’s also burgers and pizzas. All burgers come with a selected soft drink, which can be upgraded to an alcoholic drink for £1 extra. The pizza menu is extensive, encompassing everything from the classics (pepperoni) to the more adventurous (BBQ beef burnt ends ‘nduja, cajun spices and peppers). For dessert, you can choose from the likes of sticky toffee pudding and Eton mess sundae.
The Turnpike runs a lunch and drink Monday to Friday between 12pm and 4pm. A selection of sandwiches come with a soft drink for under a tenner, £1 more for an alcoholic drink. Breakfast is split between the sizable (full English, also available vegetarian) and lighter bites (eggs benedict).
As well as a selection of draught lagers, ciders and ales, the drinks menu also features 2-for-1 cocktails. There’s also a featured spirit, known as the Serve of the Month.
