Tooting’s indoor markets are now home to a thriving foodie scene, and this casual, no-reservations tapas bar, from the people behind Donostia Social Club in Pop Brixton, is a great addition. Tucked between Bordelais and Hi-Ki Robata Grill, the 24-cover Tapas Room consists of a deli, a wine shop and some bar seating for sampling the wares. And what wares they are: a brilliant selection of regional Spanish wines, sherries, vermouths and cavas, all available to drink in or take away, with ample choice by the glass – perfect for pairing with the brief list of Basque-style tapas. Expect well-executed staples such as pan con tomate and Padrón peppers, alongside punchy boquerones with piquillo peppers. More ambitious plates include white tuna with rich escalivada (Catalan ratatouille) or creamy morcilla topped with fried quails’ eggs. Cracking olives, charcuterie and cheese too. Finish with chocolate and macadamia brownie, coated in a wickedly sticky PX sherry glaze.
