Following The Star of Bethnal Green and The Star of Kings, owner Rob Star has boldly gone out and conquered a far-flung corner of the galaxy – namely Clapton. The pub’s downplayed recycled decor (including some fairground-carousel malarkey) is also bang on target for suit-averse slouches who come here to sun themselves on the wraparound terrace overlooking Hackney Downs. Pop in for a pint from London breweries such as Meantime and Five Points or opt for Prosecco, cocktails and affordable vino. Street-food scran is of the chicken wings/burger persuasion, but also expect Sunday roasts and foodie pop-ups. Meet-the-brewer sessions, quizzes, stand-up comedy, live music, Ibiza-style DJs and other sociable stuff is part of the fun; there’s also a function room resembling a Soviet ‘disko’ – if you fancy a private knees-up with your Clapton comrades.
