The Stables is a quaint, old style pub restaurant in Cowley, Exeter, where you can relax in a Chesterfield or near a crackling fireplace. The pub was originally a blacksmiths, “We wanted to stay true to the history of this grand old building, while giving it a modern twist, and a fresh lease of life.” A modern and independent freehouse with a vintage twist, The Stables serves up a wide variety of beers, lagers, wines, spirits, and coffees to complement their honest home-cooked local food in a comfortable environment.
The lunch menu is available midday until 3pm every day, except Sunday, where it's served until 4pm. Starting off the menu is a selection of jacket potatoes, served with salad and homemade coleslaw. The Stables ciabatta comes in options of grilled chicken with bacon and cheese, and Brixham fish and tartare sauce. You can also add chips or a homemade soup to your ciabatta for a little extra.
On Sunday, a roast dinner of West Country topside of beef, pork loin, turkey breast and a trio of meats is served up. All of the Sunday roasts are served with roast potatoes, honey roasted parsnips, seasonal veg, stuffing, a Yorkshire pudding and gravy. You can also get some cauliflower cheese or pigs in blankets on the side.
The Stables afternoon tea is a real showstopper. Begin with a selection of finger sandwiches, a homemade quiche and sausage roll, and some plain and fruit scones with clotted cream and jam. You'll also be served a selection of cakes, bakes and sweet treats and a pot of tea or cup of coffee. If you're feeling particularly fancy, you can upgrade to a Prosecco afternoon tea.
