SquareMeal Review of The Spurstowe Arms

Wilton Way, north of London Fields, has emerged as the most gastronomic thoroughfare in hipper-than-thou Dalston. It has the lot: a cake shop, a posh off-licence, a coffee bar, & a proper boozer in The Spurstowe Arms. The pub (now, finally, with its own sign outside) has the taxidermy, vintage lamps & artfully placed mirror ball of many a trendy urban pub, but never looks as if the designers have taken over. It’s a cool pub, loved by a cool crowd, & yet is pretty straightforward, featuring a walled beer garden, jugs of bloody Mary on the bar, a fresh pint of Broadside & some fine tunes on the sound system. Alas, the food could be so much better. Fish, chips & minted peas, & potato ravioli with wild mushrooms, are inexpensive but uninspired. A global wine list offers around a dozen wines with plenty under £20.

The Beetroot salad which cost 7.50, had one layer of as-thin-as-you-can-get beetroot on top of which lay another layer of a thinly chopped vegetable I couldn't place, they sprinkled about 4 crushed nuts and a ridiculously paltry amount of goats cheese and added way too much salt on top of this(goats cheese is salty enough anyhow). Whether or not the other food my friends had was nice, this was totally unacceptable and i'm flabbergasted at the cheek of this place to charge this much for so little and so dull. Luckily for them I was hungover at the time and didn't have the will too complain.

I live very near this pub and eat there quite often. I love it! Particulaly the Sunday roast. Occasionally there is a little too much salt In some of the dishes for my taste. They've recently employed a new chef who seems to be fantastic. I highly reccomend eating here.
