Based in the heart of Forest Hill, The Signal is a bustling pub serving a wonderful all-day food menu, as well as a wide selection of drinks. Its laid back ambience means that it attracts a fantastic mixture of different people from the local area, and now that it's been taken over by the Hippo Inns group, it's also looking slicker than ever.
Occupying the ground floor of a three-storey red brick building opposite Forest Hill tube station, The Signal's interior has almost a bistro feel to it thanks to its widely spaced wooden tables and brightly coloured walls. However, it also has that cosy ambience that you want from a local pub, with plenty of homely touches dotted around. It also benefits from a small outdoor area complete with heaters, which is particularly good for small gatherings.
In terms of food, there are a number of small bar snack-style dishes which can be enjoyed throughout the days, including hot wings, a black pudding Scotch egg, and beetroot falafels served with tzatziki. The main menu however, features starters such as peri-peri calamari and nduja mac n' smoked cheese, and main courses ranging from fish and chips to sous vide pork belly.
Desserts on offer include a playfully named hippo-bocker glory, as well as sticky toffee pudidng served with honeycomb and salted caramel ice cream. There are plenty of options for vegans and vegetarians on the menu too. If you visit The Signal on a Sunday, you can also choose to go for one of its mouthwatering roasts.
The drinks list varies from house cocktails such as a black cherry and amaretto sour, to an extensive list of wines, none of which drift north of the £40 mark. On top of this, there are a number of beers and spirits available too, as well as plenty of soft drink options.
