SquareMeal Review of The Shenkman Bar and Garden

Named after the late Belle Shenkman, a London-based Canadian patron of the arts and member of the Royal Academy, this urbane basement bar adjoined to Peyton & Byrne’s Keeper’s House restaurant opens onto a charming oasis designed by landscaper Tom Stuart Smith, whose green-fingered prowess will be known to long-serving patrons of the Chelsea Flower Show. Appropriately, its (untitled) cocktails are prepared using ingredients that reflect the current season wherever practicable. The autumn crop, for example, might yield a combo of blackcurrant and rosemary vinegar, blackcurrant vermouth, rye and beetroot, a Scotch brose cream laced with chestnut honey or a mezcal fix involving rosehips, dry sherry, carrot and black sea salt. Trendy snacks include savoury vegetable crunch or squid crackling with Cornish crab. Note that the space is only open to the public from 4pm onwards.
