The Two Fat Ladies empire has come on hugely since the original seafood restaurant opened on Dumbarton Road. Following their takeover of Glasgow’s legendary Buttery back in 2007, the team converted its spare basement into The Shandon Belles – their take on a discreet, informal and laid-back city bistro. The Victorian tenement building is not in the loveliest neighbourhood, but any aesthetic outrage fades once you get downstairs – the low ceilings, pale-grey colour scheme and almost church-like ambience create quite a haven. You might kick off with whole grilled sardines and soft herb dressing, move on to marinated salmon with Thai rice, meat loaf or feta-stuffed chicken breast on tomato mash, and finish with warm sticky toffee and apple ‘stack’ with butterscotch sauce. Express lunches offer two courses for a tenner, and fixed-price menus are terrific value (especially with a half-bottle of wine included).
