The Scarsdale Tavern

SquareMeal Review of The Scarsdale Tavern

One of the area’s finest pubs, The Scarsdale gets top marks for its lovely frontage looking onto a picturesque square & its extensive line-up of well-kept real ales (Butcombe Bitter & London Pride, among others), as well as a creditable wine list & some interesting continental beers including Verdett & Liefmanns. It also scores on the food front, with a busy restaurant at the back serving popular international staples (rib-eye steaks with béarnaise sauce, salmon suprême et al) alongside blackboard specials – from beef Wellington or confit duck to slow-roast shoulder of lamb with flageolet beans. There’s even a small terrace at the front where you can share a jug of Pimm’s on a summer evening – no wonder this place is popular.

The death of a great pub

I have been going to the Scarsdale for many years now. I have many friends in the area. I went for Sunday lunch with some good friends and the food was appalling. It was unbellievably bad. I had another friend who came and they did not eat their food as it was SO DISGUSTING.

There is NO chef as far as I can see nowdays. Before there was a real chef and they made deicious food. The place is run by Eastern European qwoman who know absolutely nothing about servise or Food.

I have NEVER written a review before but I was compelled to do so as everything except the Sussex beer - was attrocious.

It is a GREAT shame that things had become so bad - I will never go there again and many of my friends will not either.

My 2 friends had the lamb - which was mutton and came out of a packet. the vegitables were over cooked and the potatoes were certainly NOT roast. They were Cold and dishusting. I and my girlfreind had the chicked which was UNEDABLE. The woman wjo was the " so called Manager" told us that they did not do roast chicken but but just "bits of chicken" and goodness know what they do with it. They were inedable.

You need to fire the staff.........EVERYONE. They are completely oblivious of what service is. Utterly shocking.

This is a very special little place tucked away in what can only be called “deepest Kensignton”. It used to be an officer's club during the Napoleonic Wars, and they have the old Champagne bottles to prove it. The food is good, a few pub classics with a modern twist, but all top-level Gastro-Pub fare. One comes here for the atmosphere more though and that is were the Scarsdale scores full points. The Square Meal star is very well earned and the staff are much better nowadays and always have a smile. For dinner it is pruden to call ahead as the place gets very busy at times.
