Along an old country lane on the outskirts of Altrincham, The Romper is a gorgeous pub with plenty of charm. The whitewashed, slate-tiled exterior and a roaring lion perched above the entrance make sure that this old coaching inn still feels like it has retained its past story. The Romper is very popular with dog lovers, offering a warm welcome to all visitors — whether four legged or two, and is a great place to grab something to eat or have a refreshing drink if you are exploring the local area or travelling to or from nearby Manchester Airport. With easy access to Cheshire's picturesque villages and towns, including Hale, Cheadle, and Wilmslow, as well as the county's stunning countryside, this pub has a great location.
On sunny days you can eat outside in the beer garden but during the winter months, visitors can cosy up by the crackling log fire in the hearth, enjoying pints of cask ale beneath the beamed ceilings, just as it should be in a rustic country pub. The pub’s architecture goes back at least 400 years, and once called The Red Lion, the pub acquired the nickname of The Rompin' Kittlin due to a joke about the misinterpreted lion painting, and that’s how it ended up as The Romper that it is today.
To begin, enjoy pan fried mushrooms with a garlic and cream sauce on toasted garlic ciabatta and topped with Italian hard cheese, or a Mediterranean medley of edamame hummus, golden beetroot, broccoli and spiced chickpeas with pomegranate, ciabatta croûte and mixed seeds. For your main meal, why not try the hand pressed beef burger topped with slow roasted beef rib braised with a merlot and beef dripping gravy, umami mayo and Irish mature Cheddar. And last but not least, try the caramelised vanilla cheesecake served with red berries, raspberry coulis and clotted cream ice cream.
