Expectations are high at the five-star Lowry Hotel's revamped River Bar & Grill. Floor-to-ceiling windows provide great views of the city, while the terrace overlooking the river Irwell makes a tempting suntrap. The menu has an Anglo-European slant, with a new emphasis on the output of the Josper grill: dry-aged beef from farms in Blairgowrie, Glenarm and Cheshire is the star, but the line-up also extends to veal chops, rack of lamb, Usan lobsters and more besides – all served with fries and a choice of sauces. Starters are plain and simple offerings such as Caesar salad or grilled asparagus, while desserts bring trifle, cheesecake and other comfort classics. The adjoining bar blends waterside views with light bites and zesty cocktails such as Watermelon Martini or Ten Thymes (a British twist on the Mojito). Afternoon tea and live music complete the package.
