Well-zoned drinking and dining areas make this barn of a place feel buzzy and cosy: ideal for after-work drinks and bites. Although The Refinery is set in a maze of office buildings, the interior wood panelling and pelt-covered chairs give it a ski lodge vibe. The crowd is certainly in après mood, fuelled by London ales and quirky cocktails – including a low-cal gin tipple, Skinny Goldfish in a Bag, which does indeed arrive in a bag. The wacky drinks gave us high hopes for ‘chicken in a basket’, but alas there was no basket, and while the chicken was juicy and its skin crisp, the chips were pale and lacklustre. Nevertheless, a side portion of sweet potato fries tasted much better, and a flatbread pizza with goats’ cheese, fig and honey was don’t-share delicious. For dessert, order pillowy baked Alaska or share the trio of ‘pudding shots’ including a deconstructed Wagon Wheel: definitely not shot-sized. In all, this is a fun pit-stop for a boozy bite in the no-man’s-land north of Euston Road.
