The Red Lion is a traditional English pub in Arundel, West Sussex. It has occupied the same site in the town square for over 300 years, with both the pub and its neighbouring buildings providing excellent examples of the maintained period architecture that makes Arundel such a popular tourist destination. The decor is typical of pubs across the country, with a central wooden bar framed by drinking and dining areas. As well as having a large beer garden, the pub also routinely hosts live music and displays work by local artists on its walls.
The food is in keeping with the decor and exterior. Starters include soup of the day, baked Camembert, smoked mackerel pate, and salt and pepper calamari. For mains, there's a range of pub classics. These are headlined by the likes of steak and chips, pie and mash, fish and chips, and sausage and mash. Vegetarian options are also in good supply, including a Moroccan stuffed aubergine with quinoa and a plant based burger with vegan slaw and chips.
Lighter bites come in the form of sandwiches and salads, ideal for enjoying at lunchtime in the pub’s beer garden or as a quick snack during a visit to the town. As well as a traditional ploughman’s platter, you’ll also find a Caesar salad and a warm smoked duck salad. Sandwiches are served on either white, malted brown, ciabatta or gluten free bread, with fillings such as cheddar and red onion, fish fingers, and breaded chicken all on offer.
As any good pub should, The Red Lion serves a roast on Sundays. Beef, lamb, pork, and chicken are available, as well as a brie and leek lattice for vegetarians. All roasts are served with roast potatoes, buttered carrots, cauliflower cheese and stuffing.
