Fabulous restaurant venue let down by the service and the food
My companion and I had dinner at The Red Barn in Lingfield last night. Having heard good things about it over the past few years my expectations were high! First impressions were very good. The place had apparently been done up “to a high standard” 5 years ago and the old large barn was light, airy and warm, had been sympathetically modernised and and had a lovely feel about it.
Sadly, both the service and the food rather let the side down. One of the staff members seemed eager to please but another member of staff was rather abrupt – and the food was also slow in coming. My companion ordered prawn cocktail. Upon tasting it he said there was absolutely no taste of prawn and all he could taste was the cocktail. My starter was ham hock terrine which was delicious, but served with underdone toast. My companion's main course was slow roasted lamb and he recalls the menu said served with ratatouille. The lamb itself, although I thought delicious when I tried it, could not have been slow roasted as it looked a bit pink in the middle – and there was no sign of any ratatouille whatsoever, just a very watery jus which he said tasted a bit like dishwater – no excuse if the lamb was panfried!! Having tasted it I tended to agree with him. The only sign of vegetation accompanying the dish was a miniscule amount of something yellow and red in the jus. I ordered liver & bacon for my main. When it arrived it looked like a brown mess – and tasted a bit like it too. The liver – instead of showing signs of having being lightly grilled or pan fried and pink on the inside was frankly a big mush – and so was the bubble and squeak it was presented on. All in all a very disappointing outcome.
Perhaps we were unlucky – perhaps the chef was having a bad day and the whole evening had gone pear-shaped – but in any event I hope they buck their ideas up and can add to this lovely venue some friendly and professional service together with a higher standard and quality of food as I would like to try it again at some point in the near future.
