Given that the Gate Theatre is right above this neighbourhood Notting Hill boozer, it’s no surprise that thirsty thespians & culture vultures come here to get warmed up. At the bar, four regularly rotated cask ales are joined by native ciders & myriad lagers from around the world, & there’s a handy ‘try before you buy’ policy to help you decide. The food menu is equally extensive; in addition to classic starters & mains (from calamari & baked camembert to bangers & burgers), there are daily specials & a ‘with bread’ section including fish-finger baps & rib-eye steak sandwiches. The wood-panelled bar is scruffy but welcoming, & there are several cosy nooks towards the back; alternatively, a large, partially covered garden offers a welcome retreat from the tourist crowds.
