Finding decent restaurants in the middle of ‘tourist-central’ is not easy. Using Square Meal guide and just two diner reviews, booked the Potting Shed and what a surprise. It is in the basement of the Dorset Square Hotel, restaurant signage not great on street, but given excellent welcome and shown to restaurant by hotel staff. Tables for two are a bit dinky, but adequate. Menu is simple in a good way with sufficient choice. Then the real surprise. Made safe choice of battered cod, chips and pea purée expecting it to taste like dozens of versions eaten across the capital. The batter was absolutely outstanding, perfectly crisp, perfectly seasoned and for once, perfectly complementing rather than smothering the fish. Dish of the day was sole, again, very well cooked and presented but no side vegetables offered with dish. Always irritated by charges for side orders – price at least one into the food. Cheese plate was a bit sparse but remedied by staff. Wine at top end of reasonably priced. Service excellent and the sorbets very good. All in all – a real find and would highly recommend.
